Tata Group in China

Tata group is one of the most respected business houses in India, with over 90 operating companies in seven business sectors. The total revenue of Tata Group, taken together, was $67.4 billion in FY 2009-10, with 57 per cent of this coming from outside India. Tata group employs around 395,000 people worldwide. The Tata name has been respected in India for over 140 years for its adherence to strong values and business ethics.

Today Tata Groupis making China one of its strategic priorities as it internationalizes its business. In 2010, Tata group achieved sales of USD 3.0 billion andprocurement of USD 0.7 billion, with about 2,600 employees in China.

Objective of TCMP

Localization is an important strategy for Tata group in China. Tata companies need to attract young managerial talents to fuel their growth needs. As such, Tata Group HR is looking at recruiting young management talents from top Chinese business schools/universities.The objective of the Tata China Management Program (TCMP) is torecruit, train and develop a cadre of ‘Managers’ that would form core management team of Tata companies in China for future growth.

TCMP Specifications

·         Proficient in English and Mandarin Chinese

·         At least 3 years of working experiences in sales, marketing, finance, operation, investment, and corporate communication functions.The industries that would fit Tata’s requirement most include automobile, auto parts, steel, IT, marketing, trade, etc.

·         Candidates need to be passionate to build a management career in China

·         Candidates need to be ready for reasonable mobilitywithin and outside China within the Tata Group

·         Need to be aligned with Tata Values like integrity and honesty

GOAL (Group Orientation & Learning) :

TCMP managers will go through the GOAL during the first 12 months of employment, which comprises of the following

a)      GOAL Induction  ( 20 – 30 days):

1.       A month long induction programme to introduce trainees to the Tata group and its companies. It will help in building trainees' perspective on the seven core sectors of the Tata group, its current and future challenges

2.       Understanding of Tata Group overview (History , Current & Future)

3.       Understanding TCMP Overview

4.       Opportunity to network with Senior Tata Executives

5.       Structured orientation through classroom inputs and field visits

6.       Orientation can be arranged to include field visits both in India and China (To understand the challenges and opportunities for group companies in engaging with China)

GOAL Project Assignments / Rotation:

1.       One year rotation which would involve four business assignments of three months each

2.       The training module shall include, four cross functional and cross-business assignments in China, India, and any other country, as necessary, where Tata operates.

3.       There will be structured review and appraisal mechanisms to ensure that managers perform to their potential.

Assignments:

During the first year of the TCMP Program, these managers will be on the rolls of Tata Group China and will be governed by the rules / policies applicable to other similar employees.

After successful completion of the first year, the trainees would be absorbed into Jaguar Land Rover China, Tata Consultancy Services China, and Tata Steel China to undertake managerial responsibilities.

Compensation:

·         Selected candidates shall be offered with compensation packages that are appropriate with their respective experiences and market situations in China.
