Position Summary 

Being part of a small and professional team, facilitate investigation and assessment of new markets for potential strategic business development. Reporting to Vice President, Strategic Business Development and taking guidance from senior SBD executives, conducts studies that would provide analytical data for mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures. Support senior SBD executives in their project pipeline delivery.The intern is to be based in Shanghai.


Job Requirements (Principal Responsibilities) 
• Under the guidance of senior SBD Executives to conduct studies on potential market size, needs, existing and potential competitive situations, technical feasibility and other critical success factors.   Researches, analyzes and reports industry trends and data that impact business’ volume, margins, utilization, and market share.  Assesses Cabot strengths and weaknesses relative to the market needs in order to determine business opportunities for growth in current fields and expansion into new markets.  
• Some understanding of the macroeconomic environment and its relation to the industries and Cabot businesses, including competition, customers, suppliers and technology.  
• Perform assignments from the SBD leaders on assessing business opportunity starting with idea or concept. Evaluates potential new products against market opportunities/challenges and compatibility with Cabot’s strengths and business strategies. Scope covers all Cabot business segments
• Part of the supporting team to develop business cases including strategic rationale, fit and overall business plan and current asset base, financial returns, risk and mitigations, timeline, resources needed.  Provide analytical data needed in developing business plans for specific market opportunity. Support SBD leaders to critically review progress against plan.
• Supporting senior leaders in identifying and developing potential internal and external strategic partners in development of these opportunities. Works closely with cross-functional counterparts (Marketing/Sales, Finance, R&D, Legal, Manufacturing, Corp/Business Strategy) .
• Collects/analyzes market and/or customer validation data that can support decisions regarding continuation or withdrawal from specific opportunities or ventures. Supports negotiations of key terms with third parties.


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Behaviors)  
• Knowledge of the chemical/materials industries as well as some of the emerging industries such as Solar, battery and etc.
• Some knowledge of market research and commercial activities.  
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to make presentations.  
• Displays entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to explore new ideas.
• Strong team player and ability to work with multifunctional teams.
• Strong desire to learn and openness to new idea.


Education/Experience 
• A Master's degree in a science discipline or Business; Undergraduate degree in engineering preferred
• MBA degree with pre-degree relevant experience
• Minimum three years of experience including business development, business analysis marketing or market research.


Business Requirements 

Background 

In the Strategic Business Development function, we are tasked to identify, build solid cases for and execute M&A, Joint-ventures and capital investment. An important aspect contributing to the success of such project work is a thorough understanding of the macro-economic, industry, 

Customer and competitor trends. In addition, the raw material and downstream product trends relating Cabot’s products are also very important to know.


The rational for a summer intern in 2015 build are following:
• Important projects.
• New skill: I would like to bring some new skills in addition to the SBD talent pool. These new skills could include Financial Analysis, Consulting experience, Market research experience and etc.
• Resource limitation: currently we have two senior BD managers and one assistant. The intern may fill the gap in-between. We could also test the assumption that such a level is what SBD Department will need in the future.

• To candidates coming from consulting, finance or even sales functions, this role would enrich their experience in Strategic business development.
• Some of the MBA courses talk a lot about strategy, but are too abstract. This will be a good place to apply theory to practice.
• M&A work is often an art not a precise science. We hope to provide some perspective of the corporate strategy work and M&A thus will help the candidates for their future career development.
