2015 GMSCM Program Opening Ceremony

October 16, 2015 Hangzhou -A warm and red-carpet GMSCM Program opening ceremony was held for 23 freshmen of 2015 cohort. GMSCM is a double-degree program offered jointly by School of Management at Zhejiang University in China and Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Canada. Freshmen in 2015 cohort are the third batch of students since the program is launched. Prof. SHOU Yongyi, the director of MBA Program at Zhejiang University, Prof. Jiro Kondo, assistant professor in Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University, Mr. MA Shuqun, the director of admission in the region of Greater China for McGill University under GMSCM program, Mr. Alex Banh, alumni from McGill University, a partner of IPV Capital, and Mr. HUANG Zhenyu, general manager of TE Connectivity (Wuxi) Co., Ltd were present at the opening ceremony. The ceremony was held in a café which is renowned for its business incubation platform, thus the atmosphere is harmonious.

First of all, Prof. SHOU expressed the sincerest congratulations and a warm welcome to 23 freshmen of 2015 on behalf of Zhejiang University School of Management. He introduced the related information about these 23 freshmen one by one, including their educational background, industry background, job position, etc. The information shows that these freshmen of 2015 have average 9 years working experience, more than half of them have an industry background relating to manufacturing, logistics, etc. Among these freshmen of this year, 84% of them have a job title of manager and above, creating a new record over the years.


As an assistant professor in Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University and a teacher of GMSCM program from McGill, Prof. Jiro Kondo shared his rich life experience starting from his personal hobbies and interests. Jiro emphasized the importance of passion and mentioned that “you will never do better if you only get a thing done as required, rather than because you are interested in and passionate about this thing itself.”


After a short tea break for free talk, McGill University alumni, a partner of IPV Capital named Mr. Alex Banh and the general manager of TE Connectivity (Wuxi) Co., Ltd named Mr. HUANG Zhenyu gave a masterly speech respectively based on their own industry background. They also shared some information about the topics such as the development direction of future science and technology, the trends or opportunities of LoT market, the dilemmas and opportunities of China's manufacturing industry and meanwhile expressed their opinions on this industry to all the freshmen based on their rich experience and theoretical knowledge.






In the evening, Prof. Jiro Kondo gave an open class themed “The Financing of Startups in North America”. Jiro gave a detailed description about the life cycle of a startup, the types of investor, how to seek out investment and the introduction of current venture investment market with the actual cases of leading science-and-technology enterprises in North America. The content of course is very novel and practical, making those entrepreneurial teams who are strong-willed to start up a business and seek out investment get a new understanding about how to live through the initial stage of startup and how to seek out investment.
