May 9, 2014. Hangzhou -The Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management (GMSCM) students visited Bosch Power Tools (China) company in Hangzhou. Prof. SHOU Yongyi (the Director of Zhejiang University MBA Program and the Co-director of GMSCM program), Mr. MA Shuqun (Director of GMSCM Recruitment in Greater China, McGill University), and Prof. JIN Jun (Professor of GMSCM program) also attended this tour.

After checking in and having a brief overview on security procedures by LI Bin (Organizer of this visit, GMSCM 2013 student, Ambassador of ZJU Global MBA, RD director in Bosch), the visitors came into Bosch’s training center. Mrs. ZHAO Hong, General Manager in PTCN, introduced the Bosch Group and Bosch Power Tools (China) Co., Ltd. The Bosch Group is a leading global supplier of technology and services. Since 2013, its operations have been divided into four business sectors: Automotive Technology, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology. As the world’s top supplier for power tools and accessories, Bosch offers portable power tools, bench-top and measuring tools, lawn and garden tools, as well as accessories. In 2011, Bosch launched its T-edition: affordable and high-quality power tools that are specifically designed for tradesmen in China. It was worth mentioning that Bosch chosen Mr. WANG Baoqiang as star spokesperson presenting the T-edition. Mrs. ZHAO explained that it was an innovation and breakthrough for the German Enterprise, as they were known as rigorous and serious.

Mr. WEN Zhuojun (Manufacturing Director in PTCN) led the students through the Bosch plant visit. Mr. WEN explained that the Communist Party of China put forward an income doubling plan, so the labor costs raised. For this reason, the Bosch plant should increase direct productivity in order to reduce the single product cost. By only relying on workers it is difficult to continually enhance the productivity. Bosch designs some innovative product tools to assist and assure that the operations flow accurately and fast. Furthermore, Bosch organizes internal innovation contests annually in order to encourage the production line staff to develop these tools by themselves.

In the ETD lab tour, students saw a variety of laboratory certifications acquired in recent years.

Prof. SHOU experienced the power tools.

In the end of visit, Mr. NI Minjia (Senior Manager of Logistics) introduced the supply chain in PTCN.

Either production or supply chain, Bosch displayed their continued innovation and advances in technology. For the GMSCMers, this tour was a timely lesson, from which they had a better understanding of the concepts and theory tools in Product Design course. Combination of course study and enterprise visit is an outstanding feature of GMSCM program.
