September 13, 2013. Hangzhou – After a year of preparation and recruiting, the Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management (GMSCM) program today welcomed the first batch of 27 new students.
In addition to both Universities’ representatives such as Prof. Jiaping Wang (the Dean of Zhejiang University Graduate School), Prof. Xiaobo Wu (the Dean of Zhejiang University School of Management), Prof. Saibal Ray (the Associate Dean of McGill University Desautels Faculty of Management), and Prof. Longbao Wei (the Associate Dean of Zhejiang University School of Management), Mr. Rick Savone (Consul General of Canadian Consulate in Shanghai) and many executives in the industry of manufacturing, logistics and supply chain such as Mr. Doug Cai (the General Manager of Pratt & Whitney Aerotech (Chengdu)), Mr. Michel Lacombe (the Senior Technical Manager, of Pratt &Whitney), Mr. Zhiqiang Gao (the General Manager of Hiwing Materials Co., Ltd), Mrs. Ping Xie (the Vice-president of Transfar Road-Port Logistics), and Mr. Jiahao Wang (the Supply Chain Manager of Husky Injection Molding) also shared their experiences with students and honored guests wonderfully. The alumnus in related industries graduated from both Universities also participated in the ceremony and seminar, and it could be described as a grand meeting of manufacturing and supply chain management industry. At the beginning of the ceremony, Prof. Wang on behalf of the Graduate School of Zhejiang University expressed that GMSCM program was a breakthrough and meaningful attempt in the development of professional degree of Zhejiang University. It initiated the new model of global cooperation, and he hoped this could provide opportunities and possibilities for broader and deeper exchanges and cooperation.

Mr. Rick Savone announced speech on behalf of Canadian Consulate, he highly appreciated the cooperative education of these two top institutes for cultivating global talents together. Canada’s manufacturing industry is very advanced, and the cooperation, trade and culture exchanges between China and Canada are also increasing gradually. As an alumni of McGill University, Mr. Rick Savone was gratified sincerely for witnessing the establishment of this program.

Dean Wu first congratulated the development of GMSCM program and the entrance of all freshmen. Dean Wu said that GMSCM was another innovative attempt after GEP (Global Entrepreneurship Program). GMSCM program was born at the right moment during the critical phase of transformation and upgrading of global manufacturing industry, which made important significance. He considered that GMSCM would make tremendous contributions for talents’ transportation of China’s manufacturing industry and even global manufacturing industry.

Prof. Peter Todd (the Dean of McGill University Desautels Faculty of Management) did not attend that day, but he recorded a video specially to congratulate the start-up of the program and gave his warm welcome and encouragement to the accession of the freshmen.

Prof. Yongyi Shou (the Director of Zhejiang University MBA Program and the Co-director of GMSCM program) specifically introduced the highlights and curriculum of the program. And he introduced 27 new students of GMSCM program and their backgrounds respectively. These students all have experience in related industries such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, and etc. for over 7 years. They come from well-known enterprises at home or abroad such as Wahaha, Xtep, Sf-express, and etc., and students on manager or above level accounted for almost 70%. 19 of them have acquired the scholarship from the program, the obtained rate of the scholarship reached up to 70%.

After teabreak, Prof. Saibal Ray made a keynote speech to all, and its topic was “GlobalSupply Chain Risk Management”.

Subsequently, the dignitaries of manufacturing and supply chain industries shared their advanced concept and experience of their own companies and industries with students and honored guests.
Mr. Doug Cai from Pratt & Whitney Aerotech introduced UTC (including network sales status in 2012 and its presentation and value orientation in China) to everybody in details. Mr. Michel Lacombe introduced the scholarship program to its employees.

Mrs. Ping Xie, the Vice-president of Transfar Road-Port Logistics Co., Ltd (the old friend and partner of GMSCM), introduced the current situation of China road, now, road logistics has become the short board of China’s economic development, there is still a big gap between logistics operation efficiency of China and international competitors. China’s logistics cost is nearly double of developed countries. Transfar Road-Port Logistics pattern is positioned on “the operator of the integration of road logistics platforms”, it created one-stop service system by setting up efficient comprehensive platform of public service of logistics, and it filled up the blank of the command system lack of China’s road.

Mr. Gao is also one of the partners of GMSCM, he introduced the condition and development strategy of his company.

As the Supply Chain Manager of Canadian Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., Mr. Wang introduced the development of supply chain of his company. His company is the largest supplier which could provide injection mold equipment and service for plastics industry. Mr. Wang analysed the general situation and development of Husky firstly, he expounded the complexity of domestic market and emerging customer demand market deeply. He raised his own unique view about how to react to the challenge of operating costs, human capital, and China’s labor market moreover.

That afternoon, speakers and alumnus also made a sufficient discussion and exchange of the global operation of manufacturing and the existing problems of supply chain, their opinions and viewpoints provided good enlightment and thinking for the students of GMSCM program.
